Tulsi Vivah, also known as Tulsi Kalyanam, is a holy Hindu festival. In this festival, a ceremonial wedding takes place between Goddess Tulsi (a sacred basil plant, a form of Goddess Lakshmi) and a Shaligram or an Amla branch (which represents Lord Vishnu). The Tulsi Vivah marks the end of the year and the beginning of the wedding season in Hinduism. This event is observed every year during the Hindu month of Kartik, usually in October or November.

In many regions of India and Nepal, Tulsi Vivah is celebrated on Prabodhini Ekadashi or Dwadashi. It is common to prepare sweets and share festive meals with family and friends after the ritual. Beyond its religious meaning, Tulsi Vivah represents love, devotion, and the connection between the natural and divine worlds.

Her union with Lord Vishnu symbolises the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of the wedding season in Hindu culture. Many families and temples perform this ritual with devotion, decorating the Tulsi plant like a bride and arranging a small wedding ceremony with songs, prayers, and offerings.

Story Behind the Festival

There is a story about a demon named Jalandhar. He had a pious wife named Vrinda. Her devotion made him powerful. To defeat the demon, Lord Vishnu had to break Vrinda’s devotion. She felt tricked and cursed Lord Vishnu. Later, she became the sacred Tulsi plant. Lord Vishnu blessed her. He said he would marry her as Shaligram every year. This event is remembered as Tulsi Vivah.
